Years after our first news of the project and just a few months after first glancing at what we can safely call the bluest new building in downtown Austin, it’s developing Symphony place formerly known as Symphony Square, but now at least on the residential tower side the catfish is officially under construction on the southeast corner of East 12th Street and Red River Street.

To verify, this complex of two buildings will convert a land assembly in which previously the Austin Symphony Orchestra Offices in 1117 Red River Street, and a Velocity Credit Union and his garage overlooking Sabine Street at 610 East 11th Street, Both buildings have now been demolished, leaving an area of around 1.7 hectares.
The project by national multi-family developers Gray star, contains a 32-storey residential tower with mixed use in addition to an attached seven-storey office building with a total of 388 residential units, 5,000 square feet of retail space and an unknown amount of office space, though we know there is a new office (and street-level box office) for the Austin Symphony Orchestra that previously occupied the site. In addition to its designers R2L architects, The project will feature interior design by celebrated locals Michael Hsu architecture office, together with landscape architecture by TBG partner.

Despite the appearance of a crane last week, the project has been technically under construction for almost a month, with excavations and other site preps taking place here in April – but with one – after the old Austin Symphony office building on property 1117 Red River Street was demolished The tower crane, which is now lifted above the site, visibly reminds the whole city that the catfish are on their way, along with the name they use for the half of the office. How about “The Bach”?

The impact of the pandemic on development makes this milestone more significant – there are currently many tower cranes in the skyline on projects like 6 X Guadalupe and Block 185, but these projects laid the foundation before SXSW 2020 was canceled in early March, marking the unofficial one Starting shot for the effects of the pandemic on our local economy. After only Brazos-Strasse Hannover and the Vesper-Türme next to the Waller were the first towers on the plan, the crane above Symphonieplatz is one of the first to be included in the skyline for over a year.
