Austin
When you want to see the best of Austin, there’s a simple big three: barbecue, breakfast tacos, and live music. A short drive away is La Barbecue, which can hold its own with salty, hearty spice mixes in the style of Central Texas. Next on your list is the unofficial Texas breakfast: the breakfast taco. Go classic with the El Tradicional at Veracruz All Natural: Egg, bacon, beans, cheese and potatoes in a warm tortilla. At the Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ, the Real Deal Holyfield has a slice of brisket that is filled alongside these classic ingredients. Live music is slowly coming back. If you are not ready for the big venues like ACL Live at the Moody Theater or The parish, look at more intimate like The Far Out Lounge or Whisper bar.
When it’s time to close your eyes, Austin has no shortage of stylish places to rest your head. Hotel ZaZa opened at the end of 2019 in the city’s Speicherstadt; It has vintage-inspired rooms, a pool deck on the seventh floor, and a mix of artwork and photographs of some of Hollywood’s most famous faces. Do you prefer a stately affair? Stay in Commodore Perry Estate– The historic mansion and surrounding English gardens opened for guests right in the center of Austin last summer. Last, Hotel Magdalena is a fun and funky new addition that sits at multiple heights with lush landscaping and peaceful courtyards, almost like being in a tree house.

Take the Southwest direct flights from San Diego to see why Californians flock to the city of music. Aside from cheaper rents, Nashville is similar to San Diego: its strong small business community is spread across many neighborhoods and it has quick access to the great outdoors when you need a break from the city. Look for murals, cafes, and restaurants in neighborhoods like East Nashville.

Regardless of where you are, the hot chicken is an absolute must. Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack and Hattie B’s hot chicken helped put the Nashville classic on the map, but the humble one Moore’s Spicy Fried Chicken Fried was named Best Hot Chicken Spot by The Tennessean.

Denver
One of the first cities to catch the eye of Californian expats is still shining with new hotels, restaurants and attractions. First, explore some of Denver’s most pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, like the River North Art District (RiNo). It recently launched a program where local artists create a new mural every month with changing themes for Women’s History Month, Black History Month, and AAPI History Month. Elsewhere in RiNo, Denver Central Market is home to 11 vendors selling everything from artisanal cheese and butcher meat to hot chicken. In Lincoln Park, Denver’s oldest restaurant, The Buckhorn Exchange, continues to serve the most notorious dish in town: Rocky Mountain oysters.
Other new notable restaurants are Sunday vinyl, a wine bar that spins records behind Union Station; Popular Denver chef Penelope Wong’s Yuan-wonton Food truck serving dumplings and wontons (pre-order early – they sell out quickly); and Italian restaurant Olivia. Coming later this summer is Grange hall, a food hall concept from restaurateur Troy Guard.
Sleep, newbie Clayton Members Club & Hotel brings some funk to the Cherry Creek neighborhood. The hotel opened this spring with 63 rooms and a publicly accessible restaurant on the ground floor. The “Members” portion includes a rooftop lounge, speakeasy, event access, coworking spaces and more for an annual price of $ 3,000. The Curtis was renovated last year with a new lobby that plays under the slogan “Happy Camper”. Opening this fall, Hyatts Thompson Denver offers luxury accommodations within walking distance of Union Station and Larimer Square.
