Lima man’s ‘eyes opened;’ going to prison

LIMA – A Lima man was sentenced on Monday to two years in prison for his role in the armed robbery of an acquaintance in April 2020. Two other Lima residents had previously been convicted in connection with the robbery.

Kaiden Keller, 20, of Lima, said Judge Jeffrey Reed that the incident and his subsequent arrest “really opened my eyes” and resulted in a lifestyle change. Keller apologized to the victim and the judge, saying he stopped drinking and using drugs, which were a constant in his life at the time of the robbery.

Keller was charged with aggravated robbery, a first-degree crime involving three years of weapon specification, in August 2020; and complicity in the commission of a criminal offense, a first-degree crime that includes a three-year weapon specification.

The indictment alleged that he or an accomplice wielded a pistol around April 11 of that year during a theft offense against Austin Parker and that Keller assisted or aided another robbery offense.

At the end of July, Keller accepted an offer from the public prosecutor’s office and, in return for dismissing all other charges, pleaded guilty to an amended charge of robbery, a second-degree crime.

According to court documents, Keller, Swan “Bo” Nichols and Colleen McKee participated in an orchestrated attempt to drug Parker in retaliation for Parker’s alleged theft of unspecified items.

Keller was in the back seat of a vehicle with Parker, Nichols and McKee in the front seat when Nichols reportedly produced a firearm to facilitate the robbery. Keller initially denied beating Parker but admitted in court Monday that he beat him.

He also told the judge that he knew Nichols had a gun, but “we told him not to bring it” on the night in question.

Reed told the Lima man that he would consider a judicial release for Keller in about four months if he is eligible, based on the credit for the prison sentence already served.

Nichols was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for robbery and an additional year in prison in November for using a firearm to commit the crime. McKee was sentenced to 36 months in prison last week for her involvement in the robbery.
