Lisa Franke loves to bake cakes and said it was like traveling back in time to touch a piece of history, because baking cakes is an old tradition that has been passed on through generations of bakers.

Lulus Pie Shoppe was founded in Franke’s house nearly five years ago, and now she sells her pies from the 1967 Mobile Scout trailer she named Lucille. However, at the beginning of the pandemic, Franke stopped taking Lucille to the cake sale. Instead, she delivered door-to-door throughout Georgetown and the Austin area. Franke said this was a way for her to give something back to the community.

“It was a great thing to do during the pandemic,” said Franke. “Bringing people cakes made them happy. It was like healing. “

Franke has been making baked goods for a long time. Before Lulus Pie Shoppe, she called herself Lulus Bakery and sold a variety of pastries. However, Franke discovered that her love for pate and dough superseded all other baked goods, and so she decided to get into the cake business full-time.

According to Franke, it took her three years to finish her dough recipe and still refine her recipe in search of perfection.

“As a baker you have to be precise,” said Franke.

At Lulus Pie Shoppe, customers can order all kinds of cream cakes such as banana cream, key lime, and chocolate cream. Franke also sells apples; Peach; Cherry; Pumpkin; and their specialty, bourbon pecan pie, which is made from Schwegmann’s local Georgetown pecans and Texas bourbon.

“I like to make people happy through food; I enjoy it, ”said Franke about her decision to bake.

Originally from Chicago, Franke moved to Texas with her family in 2000 and settled in Georgetown in 2017.

Franke’s son Noah attended a cooking school in Chicago and came to Lulus about a year ago to bring a hearty line to the cake shop. In addition to fruit and cream cakes, Lulus also sells deep-dish pizza and lasagna.

“Noah is a very well trained cook and his pasta is a dream,” said Franke about her son.

Lulus is taking orders for the holidays through November 14th on its website. Patrons can also visit Franke and Lucille at events in the Austin area during the Christmas season.
