Make room for a classic San Antonio & Austin taco competition

Who has the better tacos – San Antonio or Austin? It’s an age-old debate between the two (dare I say warlike) cities. Always the underdog, San Antonio is generally confident we deserve the title, although national media often highlight our northern neighbors.
Now on Thursday July 15, the San Antonio Food & Wine Alliance is hosting a Taco Rumble competition and fundraising event to put both cities’ tacos to the test. The event takes place from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm at Espee, formerly known as Sunset Station (and the location for Selena’s “No Me Queda Mas”).
Eighteen taco spots, nine for each city, will compete against each other in this friendly competition. However, the rumble will only have one winner and the winning taco will be determined by a jury.
Participating taquerias and taco artisans from San Antonio include: ¡Bucho! Tejano Street Fare, Carnitas Lonja, Chelas Tacos, La Fonda de Jaime 2.0, La Generala, Jason Dady Catering, Lalas Gorditas, Milpa and Naco Mexican Eatery.

“We’re excited to be hosting our first ever San Antonio event and fundraising for our South Texas culinary education and fellowship programs,” said Brandon Watson, communications director for the Texas Food & Wine Alliance to MySA, of these amazing restaurants taking the title belt with them Home. ”
Jurors include Texas Monthly Food Editor Pat Sharpe, San Antonio Express-News food critic Mike Sutter, Latin Grammy Award nominated musician Gina Chavez, San Antonio-based blogger and influencer Stephanie Guerra (aka @puropinchesa) and Texas Eats presenter David Elder.
Event participants can also submit their bids for favorite tacos, which will be included in the final rating.
Guests will also enjoy a live DJ performance from DJ Catwalk and a variety of spirits and libations. To top it off, Bakery Lorraine, Lick Honest Ice Creams and Paleteria San Antonio will cater for your sweet tooth.
Tickets are available now and cost between $ 65 and $ 150. A VIP ticket option is also available, with a free YETI wine tumblr, snacks, and an exclusive mezcal and tequila tasting.
All proceeds will go towards the San Antonio Food & Wine Alliance’s efforts to give back to the local culinary community through its grant program for chefs, farmers, organizations and artisans.
