Matthew McConaughey won’t run for Texas governor in 2022

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Actor Matthew McConaughey is not running for governor of Texas after months of publicly flirting with the idea of becoming the newest celebrity candidate.

The Oscar winner said in a video released on Sunday night that political leadership was not a path he was going to take “right now.” McConaughey, 52, said he would instead focus on helping companies and foundations that are opening up other avenues to success.

The race for the governor of Texas is already developing into one of the most high-profile competitions in the nation in 2022. Republican Governor Greg Abbott is moving towards a third term, and Democrat Beto O’Rourke, who has filed failed applications for the US Senate and President, announced month he was in the running.

The Dazed and Confused and Dallas Buyers Club star had never said which party – if anything – he would go down while admitting he was considering running for governor in his home state. McConaughey had also shied away from entering into political idiosyncrasies and positions on contentious issues in Texas.

“Politician? The good ones can help us get where we need to go, yes, ”McConaughey said in the video posted on Twitter. “But let’s be clear, there is nothing they can do for us unless we choose to do it for ourselves.”

In California, former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner ran for governor in a failed GOP-led recall campaign against Democratic governor Gavin Newsom that year, but gained little momentum.
