NFL in Austin? Report says Buffalo Bills threatening move to Central Texas

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin became home to its first professional sports franchise earlier this year when Austin FC kicked off its first season of Major League Soccer. But now, a report from ESPN states that another breed of professional football team might call Central Texas home.

According to a tweet from Seth Wickersham, an ESPN.com writer, the NFL’s Buffalo Bills are considering moving to Austin as a leverage game to raise $ 1.5 billion in public funding for a new stadium.

“A source of ownership tells me that Austin is a potential target – or threat – as one of the ‘other cities elsewhere that would want and pay well for an NFL franchise,'” said Wickersham’s tweet.

How legitimate is this Buffalo Bills threat? Questionable at best. NFL teams looking for new stadiums have often used a move to another city as a threat to raise more public funding for new stadiums.

Before moving to Las Vegas, the Oakland Raiders considered moving to San Antonio. Currently, the Oakland Athletics and Major League Baseball have made a move to Las Vegas during their stadium negotiations with the city.

However, it is doubtful that the Dallas Cowboys or Houston Texans would welcome a third franchise in the state. Dallas dominates ratings everywhere and views the San Antonio market as a kind of second home.

Before the MLS came to Austin, the city had the unique distinction of being the largest city without a professional sports team. But even at Austin FC, Austin does not have a franchise of any of the four major professional sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) in the US

KXAN reached out to the office of Governor Greg Abbott, the City of Austin, and Travis County leaders for a statement.

Governor Abbott retweeted the KXAN story with a “👀” emoji on Sunday night.
