No. 8/8 Men’s Basketball to play Sam Houston in Gregory Gym on Monday, Nov. 29

Austin, Texas – The University of Texas men’s basketball team will host Sam Houston Presented by American Campus Communities in coordination with the student government and the Texas SAAC at historic Gregory High School on Monday, November 29th. This is UT’s first men’s basketball competition at Gregory Gym since the Longhorns, Baylor played in the first round of the Southwest Conference tournament on February 26, 1977.
Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Central and the game will be broadcast live on Longhorn Network. The Texas-Sam Houston competition is not included in the 2021-22 UT Season Ticket Package. The university does not sell tickets or distribute tickets for this game as it is an event for UT students only.
University of Texas students who are Big Ticket holders get free entry to the game, first come first served. Before the game, there will be a party in the Tower from 4.30pm to 6pm in the UT Tower. This event is free to all UT students who must show their student ID to receive free food from several of Austin’s best food trucks. There will be a live concert by Blackillac, voted best hip hop / rap group by the Austin Music Awards.
At the end of the pre-game party, Head Coach Chris Beard and the Texas Cheer & Pom will take the students from the UT Tower to the Gregory Gym. The doors in the Gregory Gym open at 6 p.m. First 2,000 students receive a retro Texas basketball shirt and free Stubb’s BBQ. UT students are encouraged to arrive early for freebies, games, and opportunities to win, including $ 1,000 and an iPhone 13 courtesy of the American Campus Communities.
Gregory Gym, located in the heart of the UT campus, served as the home of Texas Basketball from the 1930-31 season through the 1976-77 season. The Longhorns won a 34-33 win over North Texas on December 5, 1930 in the first men’s basketball competition, which was held at the Gregory Gym. Over a period of 47 years, Texas set an overall record of 383-160 (0.705) in Gregory.
The Texas-Sam Houston competition is the first men’s regular-season basketball game to be played at Gregory Gym since a 90-51 win over Rice in Texas on February 22, 1977. The Longhorns then ended their time with Gregory with a 72-70 loss to Baylor in the first round of the Southwest Conference Tournament on February 26, 1977.
Texas moved into its current home in the Frank Erwin Center before the start of the 1977/78 season. Gregory Gym still serves as the home ground for Texas volleyball.
UT leads Sam Houston 15-2 in the all-time series, including a 79:63 home win last year (December 16, 2020). The Longhorns and Bearkats have previously played eight times at Gregory Gym, all between the 1939-40 and 1951-52 seasons. Texas holds a 7-1 record against Sam Houston at Gregory Gym.
