Richter Architects receive the highest distinction from the Texas Society of Architects

A Corpus Christi architectural firm hired to build the new Rockport Center for the Arts, which is currently under construction, recently received the Texas Society of Architects’ Medal for Lifetime Achievement. The TSA’s highest honor went to David Richter, FAIA, and Elizabeth Chu Richter, FAIA.

The annual award is presented in recognition of the lives of outstanding leaders and outstanding achievements in support of the architectural profession, the built environment and the quality of life in Texas. The couple will be honored at TSA’s 82nd Annual Conference and Design Expo in San Antonio, October 7-9.

“We knew we made the right choice when we selected Richter Architects as our designer for the new Rockport Center for the Arts,” said Luis Purón, Executive Director of RCA. “And the announcement of this well-deserved award only strengthens our confidence in this decision.”

The $ 8.7 million coastal contemporary art facility is located in the heart of downtown Rockport and is expected to be completed in August 2022.

“Over the years we have been very fortunate to have many creative collaborations with clients who share common values,” the Richters said in a joint statement. “It is the best and maybe the only way to achieve good architecture.”

Together, the two have devoted countless hours to local, state, and national organizations, including both serving as presidents of their local chapter and the Texas Society of Architects. In 2015, Chu Richter became only the fourth woman to be elected president of the American Institute of Architects, making it the first time a Texas woman and an Asian-American headed the organization.

The new RCA will house a 14,000 square meter complex for visual arts and arts education as well as an 8,000 square meter performing arts facility and a convention center with a kitchen for culinary arts education and meeting rooms. The outdoor sculpture garden will house works from the permanent collection of nationally and internationally recognized artists.

The Rockport Center for the Arts is currently located at 401 S. Austin St. on the first floor of the Baker Law Building. The opening times are Tuesday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Visit the RCA website or Facebook or call 361-729-5519 for more information.
