Spurs Sports and Entertainment has made a “strategic investment” in an Austin mobile gaming esports company.
Tribe Gaming’s investor group said Spurs’ minority stake opens opportunities for cross-content collaborations, marketing opportunities and “shared strategic know-how,” the company said Tuesday.
What exactly means remains to be seen. Patrick Carney, founder and CEO of Tribe Gaming, says in a video posted on Twitter that more announcements will follow in the coming weeks, but the investment will help “dominate the world of mobile esports”.
“This relationship is not a one-time transaction,” Carney says in the video.

Tribe Gaming was founded in 2017. The company currently comprises 18 of the best mobile gaming content developers and seven competitive championship-level esports teams. Its largest competitive mobile game is Brawl Stars, a multiplayer online battle arena game in which players compete against rival teams to achieve various goals.
“We have great respect for what they have already achieved and are excited to be part of the future of Tribe Gaming,” said Joe Donnelly, associate vice president of corporate development at SS&E.
Tribe’s other investors include Charlotte Hornet’s all-star Gordon Hayward, mobile gaming veteran Kristian Segerstrale, WWE wrestler Claudio Castagnoli and angel investor Victor Krahn.
