MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Covington First United Methodist pastor believes that a couple who came to their church pretending to need help took the keys to their large grocery truck and drove them away from their property a few hours later.
“Our surveillance video shows it was taped between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm on Tuesday,” said Pastor Michael Pence. “When we called the police, they found footage of the truck driving out of town on Highway 14, the Austin Peay Highway on the County Line.”

Pence said the couple showed up at church on Tuesday, and when they noticed the truck was missing on Wednesday, they found the keys were gone too.
“We feel like they provided the wrong information and they just walked through the building and found the keys to our truck,” said Pence. “We know the truck wasn’t broken into, so they had to use keys.”
The Bread of Life Food Pantry provides food for 75-100 families in Tipton County each week. Pence said they are using the 18-foot food truck to collect groceries from area grocery stores and the Mid-South Food Bank.

He said they can’t pick up the bulk goods from Memphis without the truck.
“They’re loading on pallets, which is the main reason we bought the truck so we could make these trips to the Mid-South Food Bank,” said Pence. “They don’t load on pickups or flatbed trucks. They only load onto trucks. “

He said volunteers have advanced with pickup trucks, trailers and vans to collect donated groceries from local grocers and community groups, but they will be limited in their options.
Pence said they are still doing drive-through food distributions and the need is greater than ever.
“Now that school has started, it’s starting to recover and COVID is making a comeback,” he said.
Bread of Life is written on the stolen white panel van, but Pence said it is possible the vehicle has been painted.
“I was looking for. Someone suggested putting on Craig’s list and see if you find any new entries, but I didn’t see any. I’m sure there are other ways to sell stolen vehicles, ”said Pence.
