Theaster Gates partners with Prada Group to open a color designer incubator.
Long before the cultural reckoning of the lack of diversity in the design industry came about last year, Theaster Gates was working on creating space for black and brown creatives through its Chicago-based Rebuild Foundation. Now the multidisciplinary artist and activist has teamed up with the Prada Group to create the Dorchester Industries Experimental Design Lab, a three-year incubator for aspiring color designers in the fields of furniture, industrial, graphic and fashion design. “Practitioners of color grow when they have the opportunity to ask, discuss, and ask difficult questions inside and outside their field,” Gates said in a last interview. In its freshman year, the lab will host public programs on the South Side of Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City. The opening class will be announced in October.

Although the global trend towards fashionable cloth masks may be coming to an end, the changed travel guidelines are a reminder that it makes sense to play it safe.
ICON manufactures 3D printed houses in Austin that are designed to withstand natural disasters.
Using ICON’s proprietary technology and a stronger, more resilient building material, Logan Architecture led the design of the four-part development of 3D printed houses, a partnership with developer 3Strands.
