Where to Find Juneteenth Events in Austin With Great Food and Drinks

Juneteenth – the holiday commemorating the end of black slavery on which President Abraham Lincoln’s 1865 declaration finally reached Galveston, Texas two years later – takes place this weekend on Saturday, June 19, B. Freedom Day or Emancipation Day), several food and beverage events are held in the Austin and central Texas area.
Everything below takes place on June 19th unless otherwise noted.
- The Central Texas Juneteenth Celebration includes a socially distant and masked parade through the Central East Austin / Chestnut / Foster Heights / Rosewood neighborhoods, as well as an end-of-route festival with entertainment, games, and food vendors to be announced. The parade runs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. the festival from 12pm to 5pm; the evening event with concert and music from 5 to 9 p.m., followed by fireworks. The event will also be broadcast live. This is a collaboration between several Greater East Austin Youth Association organizations; Black Austin Coalition; George Washington Carver Museum, Culture and Genealogy Center; Six Square Austin; Austin Area Urban League; and Austin Justice Coalition. - The modern African American food truck Distant Relatives offers a limited meal special for the vacation. Look out for grilled pork chops soaked in sweet onion sauce. It will be available from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. or sold out. (3508 East Seventh Street, Govalle)
- An unveiling ceremony, block party and barbecue will be held on Friday June 18 to commemorate the new historic marker for Austin’s earliest African-American cemetery, Burditt Prairie Cemetery. It runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (6700 Felix Avenue, Montopolis)
- Austin Food Truck Krab Kingz is offering a special in both his Pflugerville restaurant and East Austin Food Truck. The $ 35 special includes clusters of crab, prawns, potatoes, eggs, corn, and sausages, as well as other specialty drinks in the restaurant. (The restaurant is at 1202 Farm to Market 685, Pflugerville; the truck is at 517 North I-35, East Austin)
- Travis County’s park-centric celebration includes fishing, swimming, COVID-19 vaccinations, and food stalls. It runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (East Metro Park, 18706 Blake Manor Road, Manor)
- The Juneteenth Rhythm and Ribs Festival combines food, BBQ and live music for the day at Round Rock’s Old Settlers Park. It runs from 4:00 p.m. to midnight, with grill winners announced at 5:00 p.m. (Lakeview Pavilion, Old Settlers Park, 3300 East Palm Valley Boulevard, Round Rock).
- The Juneteenth Foundation, Inc. is hosting a charity BBQ evening in San Marcos Plaza Park that day. It runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (206 NCM Allen Parkway, San Marcos)
- The nonprofit Bastrop Juneteenth Celebration’s block party includes dancing, games (with prizes), kids’ activities, and food. It runs from 6:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. (Main Street between Spring and Chestnut Streets, Bastrop)
- The Hopewell Community Club event includes a tour of the Hopewell Rosenwald School with former students sharing their experiences, as well as barbecue, drinks and games. Runs noon to 3 p.m. (690 State Highway 21 West, Cedar Creek)
- The Black Families of Hutto Friends are holding their second event in June with a march, speakers and a festival with vendors and food trucks. The march begins at 9:30 a.m. at Hutto Middle School on 1005 Exchange Boulevard, speakers begin at 11 a.m. in City Hall at 500 West Live Oak Street, and the festival starts from noon to 6 p.m. (500 West Live Oak Street, Hutto)
