7 things to know in Austin food: Famous sandwich shop lands at airport

Openings and tremors

Anton’s famous Po’Boys now caters to hungry Austin travelers. The Houston-born sandwich shop has just opened three grab-and-go sandwich stations at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, according to a press release. “Demand for Antone’s in Austin has increased and we look forward to the community growing,” said CEO Craig Lieberman. “Antone’s has been an iconic Texas staple for 59 years, and we’re focused on feeding more Texans as we approach our 60th anniversary this fall.”

Southern Congress’ long awaited St. Elmo Public Market has had some tremors lately. Well-known tenant Family Business Beer Company, Dripping Springs brewery, which is jointly owned by supernatural star Jensen Ackles, has withdrawn from development, as has a new concept from the co-owners of Lick Honest Ice Creams, according to Eater Austin. After many delays, the 40,000 square meter market square is expected to open this year.

In the southeast of Austin, a new whiskey distillery is preparing for its debut. Fierce Whiskers Distillery, a new rye and bourbon whiskey distillery of the Texan natives Tim Penney and Tri Vo, produces “Grain-to-Glass-Whiskey according to an all-in-house process”, which also includes a copper pot still of the renowned Owned by Vendome Copper and Brass Works. Additionally, the five-story bonded rickhouse will allow the distillery more creative control in the stubborn Texas climate. Speaking of ghosts, WhiskeyX should return to Austin in the fall. It takes place on November 4th at the Fair Market and attendees can look forward to tasting and discovering over 60 whiskeys from around the world. In addition, the festival will include a live concert by Austin’s own Shakey Graves, celebrating the 10th anniversary of his 2011 album Roll the Bones. Hill country based Bierburg brewing Introduces a new monthly multi-course dinner that expertly combines Chef Ricardo Gutierrez’s thoughtful Mexican cuisine with the brewery’s unique Wildcraft Ales. The monthly series begins on Wednesday June 30th with a four-course meal that includes combinations like an aguachile with a gin barrel-aged pale ale and grilled short rib tacos with a red wine barrel-aged session rye ale. Coming to Pioneer Farms on Thursday, July 8th: a family-friendly outdoor screening of the 2017 superhero movie Wonder Woman, hosted by the Austin Chapter of The ladies from Escoffier. Guests are invited to watch the film from their car or bring a blanket or chairs to sit outside. Refreshments include picnic baskets and snack boxes, as well as wine, beer, and artisanal cocktails from a variety of vendors and sponsors. All proceeds go to the Les Dames scholarship program, which supports women who seek excellence in the food, beverage and hospitality industries. Just in time for the holidays on July 4th, a popular Austin brewery has added a refreshing new beer to its core range. New off Independence Brewing Co.: The pure Stoke Hazy IPA.
