University of Texas at Austin reinstating fee for students to take food to-go from dining halls

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The University of Texas at Austin will again charge an additional fee for students with unlimited meal plans taking take-away from the dining rooms.

The university said that for the past year, students were allowed to have take-away meals at no extra charge as part of their unlimited meal plan.

But in an email to KXAN, Erich Geiger, Senior Director of Dining and Catering for University Housing and Dining, says the $ 7.50 takeaway fee is a change back to its 2019 Eco2Go program, which is the “Normal way” for the program is to use.

The Eco2Go program allows students to take away food from the canteens with a reusable container that can be returned for a new container or a coin to redeem for a container. The program’s website states that students on the Resident Unlimited and Longhorn Unlimited meal plans will have to pay $ 7.50 in addition to a meal swipe each time they have a take-away meal.

Eco2Go was put on hold last year and opened with temporary accommodation this year, Geiger says, but now the campus is moving into normal campus operations that include reinstating the to-go fee.

Students with one of the unlimited meal options can use Dine In Dollar, Flex Dollar, or Bevo Pay to pay the additional fee or the typical cash or card payment.
