Austinites in need of their favorite Maine squeeze don’t have to have shellfish when indulging at the city’s newest lobster restaurant.

Here to butter you with all that sweet lobster meat to shake a claw on: Garbo’s Fresh Maine Lobsters new stationary location that officially opened to the public – almost two years after the company moved the space at 12709 N. secured .Mopac expressway.

The family-run restaurant is the salty creation of Connecticut-born daughter Heidi Garbo, who first launched a similar concept in the Florida Keys. After moving to Austin, she opened Garbo’s as a food truck, then added another truck, then another (and a couple of pop-ups) before she and her two sisters served their love of east coast lobster stands in restaurant form.

The first stationary Garbo location, which opened in Wells Branch in 2014, was closed last October in anticipation of the opening of the North Mopac Shack, which initially only had to offer take-away and roadside pick-up services due to the pandemic. The new lobster hut is now Garbo’s only stationary location, making it a big fish in the small pond of excellent seafood restaurants in Austin.

Garbo’s replaces Opal Divine’s former location in Northwest Austin, which closed in 2019 bar.

“The last two years have been the toughest years I’ve ever had as a restaurant manager,” says Garbo. “The hits just kept coming. We opened limited indoor restaurants this spring, for a full year after the renovations. Now that the private dining room is open, we finally feel like we can celebrate the courage that brought us here. “

The new crustacean station will serve all of the East Coast seafood delicacies that inland Austinites crave, from classic Maine and Connecticut lobster rolls to ocean fish and chips, a tempting selection of fresh oysters and raw vegetables, crab cakes, fish dip, lobster mac and cheese, grilled lobster cheese, and – oh yeah – whole steamed Maine lobster.

The drinks menu, curated by Small Victory’s Beverage Director Josh Loving, includes wine, beer, and beach cocktails that are perfect for virtually transporting guests to a seaside spot, like the Blue Hawaii Wine Cooler, the rum-centric Garbo’s grog cocktail that Long Island cocktail on tap and the Bloody Mary-esque Garbo’s red snapper.

This New England cuisine with an Austin twist is as fresh as you can get it in Texas. And considering the brand has served more than 60,000 lobster sammies to grateful Austinites since 2015, we’d say Garbo plays a role.

From Thursday, November 4, Garbo’s will open early for brunch on the weekends, Tuesday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. And lobster lovers who want to be pampered with a spectacular festive dinner are also in luck, because the restaurant is open for business on Christmas Day this year.
