West of downtown Austin, sandwich shop and deli! Eat! has served casseroles, sandwiches, and baked goods for nearly three decades. Owner Susan Eggert said her home stood the test of time by sticking to its niche.
“We joked years ago, my husband and I, that our motto should be that we offer a little comfort in uncertain times. And that’s definitely still the case, ”said Eggert.
Eggert opened the Tarrytown Deli in 1993 with his then business partner Steven Creitz, embedded in the Casis Shopping Center, where it still stands today. Before opening the store, Eggert graduated from a graduate school in environmental planning, but was drawn to cooking as a form of procrastination, she said.
“It’s this classic story – I made the decision to cook rather than my job,” she said. “If I had to do something else, I would cook.”
After experimenting with a variety of dishes, Eggert and her partner found that the customers in their neighborhood were most attracted to the “home cooking,” so they leaned on the menu items that were most “homely and warm” felt like: take-and-bake casseroles for the family or as a couple, pasta salads, soups and the like.
Even today, dishes like King Ranch Chicken Casserole and Lasagna are top sellers for professionals who take a take-away dinner on the way home from work.
The store’s sturdy sandwich menu is popular for lunch, Eggert said, including the classic triple-decker turkey and bacon club with bread from local Easy Tiger bakery.
Much of the menu “has its roots in old, classic recipes,” says Eggert, from the delicatessen box to the shop’s selection of desserts; Both devil’s eggs and spice cakes come straight from her grandmother’s recipe book. This taste of tradition arouses the desire for comfort food, which Eggert still sees in her community after 28 years, and she always comes back.
“It’s a very difficult job, I think. But at the same time it’s very enjoyable, because nothing makes people as happy as food, ”she said.
