Frank’s Diner is feeling the love of the Food Network, fans

Encore performance at “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” receives rave reviews

Kevin Ervin had butterflies in his stomach the moment his iconic downtown diner performed on Food Networks “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” on Friday night.

“I’m excited and nervous,” said Ervin, co-owner of Frank’s Diner, before his episode aired. “I don’t want to look like an idiot or make a whole lot of shouting about nothing. Still, it’s really exciting to be on national TV and make our city stand out. “

He had nothing to fear. The show, hosted by celebrity chef Guy Fieri, received rave reviews.

At the end of the episode, Ervin was preparing for the onslaught of customers who would come to Franks Diner at 508 58th Street on Saturday morning. He was very happy with the way the show went.

“We told the staff to get ready, get ready,” said Ervin. “We will give our best.”

Dozens of residents crowded 58 Below, 504 58th St., for a guard party hosted by Ervin and co-owner Julie Rittmiller. Whenever Franks, one of the three diners on the show, appeared on the screen, the crowd broke out.

Franks had unexpectedly closed for a day in May so a crew of half a dozen could secretly film.

Fieri first visited the diner in 2007 when it was owned by Chris Schwartz and Lynn Groleau. Ervin and Julie Rittmiller bought the house in 2010.

Fieri did not attend the diner for this newest segment due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, he recalled his past experiences in the diner and responded to the recently filmed footage of the new owners of the diner and the updated menu.

Ervin and Rittmiller made a spicy ham sandwich, homemade bread – which was first featured when Franks was highlighted – and black bean and sweet potato hash. Their massive rubbish plates – a mountain of eggs, meat, vegetables and hash browns – were also highlighted.

“I’m excited and proud,” said Rittmiller after the show. “My employees, my customers, the community. We couldn’t have done that. ”

Ervin expressed similar feelings. He thanked everyone who attended the guard party.

“Thanks for coming out. Julie and I really appreciate all of you and the support you have given us over the years, ”said Ervin.

Staff member Austin Babel said it “felt great” watching the episode.

Babel said he plans to celebrate with a few drinks before the morning rush.

Employee Jolly Jackson said the employees “work hard every day to bake home-baked bread” and appreciate the recognition.

Andy Anderson, a native of Kenosha who now lives in Chicago, drove here to watch the episode with friends.

“It was a great time,” he said. “It was great to see that. I love Frank’s diner. It was fantastic.”
