Jewels Shrader, general manager of Chuy’s, said she lived in Springboro and saw what the DORA was doing in that town. She said it would be “a big win” for Austin Landing.

DORAs were launched in Ohio in 2015 as a tool for economic development and a way of promoting community and business awareness.

“Austin Landing fits in perfectly (with the DORA concept) because it’s a relatively self-contained, walk-in community,” said Morris. “Everything is included, so it’s very easy to draw lines.”

The “keep-the-night-going” concept behind such outdoor drinking areas offers companies and their customers more flexibility.

“Often times you want to stay after dinner and have a drink and chat after dinner,” said Morris. “This would allow this supplier to sell this drink, these people could go outside and continue their conversation in the park to open that table for new business.”

As in other outdoor drinking areas, guests are served drinks in specially designed plastic cups. Signage shows the boundaries of the district and where DORA drinks are allowed and prohibited.

The opening hours of the outdoor drinking area can be changed for special events with the approval of the township administrator in consultation with the township police, according to Deputy Township Administrator Christopher Snyder.

The Miami Twp. DORA, which has already been approved by the state, is expected to be fully functional for the next several weeks as cups roam around restaurants and bars, signs are posted, and companies decide to be accepted into or excluded from the district.
