Park Ridge, IL (WorkersCompensation.com) – The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) signature event celebrated its 60th anniversary in September as attendance more than doubled from its virtual conference in 2020.
ASSP’s Safety 2021 Professional Development Conference and Exposition was a hybrid experience for the first time, welcoming 4,993 registered attendees in person and online. Last year’s virtual conference had 2,375 participants. The annual event is one of the largest conferences in the US for occupational safety and health professionals.
This year’s 2,591 online attendance was higher than last year’s total, and an additional 2,402 attendees traveled to Austin, Texas, September 13-15. The success of the event – the fourth highest number of visitors in the history of the ASSP – reflected the commitment to contribute to the improvement of occupational safety and health protection worldwide in a challenging time. It was also evidence of ASSP’s proactive implementation of comprehensive safety and health protocols at the Austin Convention Center.
“Occupational safety professionals want to stay up to date with best practices, industry trends and the latest product innovations,” said Brad Giles, president of ASSP, PE, CSP, STS, FASSP, GIOSH. “Regardless of your expertise, there are always new safety techniques and strategies to learn as we adapt to the changing world of work.”
In addition to its popularity, Safety 2021 featured a dynamic exhibition of 371 stalls spread over 65,000 square meters. The extensive product presentation was a central element of the personal experience.
Safety 2021 had 2,513 first-time visitors, making up more than half of the total visitors. Almost a third of the conference attendees were non-members who received a free year of ASSP membership upon registration. Both customer segments signal future growth for ASSP and the occupational health and safety profession.
“We pride ourselves on being the leader in professional development for the occupational health and safety community,” said Giles. “Our event shares case studies and new approaches to security, as well as extensive networking opportunities that can help practitioners overcome challenges, innovate and advance their careers.”
In a post-event survey of Safety 2021 attendees, 94 percent of respondents said they would recommend the conference to a colleague, while 90 percent said the event helped them identify key issues and emerging challenges for the occupational health and safety profession.
ASSP’s Safety 2022 takes place June 27-29 in Chicago and will be another hybrid experience with face-to-face and online components. McCormick Place is the largest convention center in North America. The event location on the lake is only a few minutes away from the city center. Chicago is known for its architecture, museums, the Magnificent Mile, Navy Pier, Millennium Park, and deep-dish pizza. ASSP’s global security event began in Chicago in 1962.
Groups wishing to attend Safety 2022 can save on the entire conference. A record of 98 saved groups at this year’s event. To learn more about group offers, contact ASSP group coordinator Nancy O’Toole at notoole@assp.org.
