As the sun set in Zilker Park on Saturday, a huge crowd gathered for the set of rising star Remi Wolf at 3:20 p.m.

Under a name logo with a day glow and a bubble letter, the 25-year-old singer hopped across the stage, played her vocal skills and treated the crowd like a professional.

She was a stylistic shapeshifter throughout the set. She opened the set with “Rufufus,” which instilled a soulful R&B groove with rock vibes as she leaned into the power of her voice, which was alternately smoky and screaming, as she unfolded a story of precarious girl and girl love.

Most of her set broke the lines between pop, rock and R&B, with Wolf exploring the breadth and character of her voice like a young Brittany Howard. But she clearly comes from the new generation of artists who, in search of their voice, ignore the specifics of the genre.

She screamed about electro fuzz and distortion at “Liquor Store”, played her rhyming skills on “Monte Carlo” and tried to inspire a mosh pit with the punky “Quiet on Set”.

She led the crowd in a passionate sing along to Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”, but the audience also knew all the words about Wolf’s own catchy tunes like “Grumpy Old Man” and further elaborated “Shawty”.

From the point of view of the heat index, Wolf has thrown a spanner in the works with the time it has set. At one point she noticed that her makeup was “melting all over the place”. But based on the size and enthusiasm of her audience and the raw skill she has shown in her performance, she seems poised to move up the list quickly.
