Everything is bigger in Texas from what the locals say, and that’s not just limited to BBQ tomahawk steak chops. Austin and the surrounding area’s music festivals are some of the best in the country, and many have long been waiting for their comeback in the past year and a half.
A big part of Austin’s culture is music, and the festivals that emerge from it are magical. The Great Outdoors has never sounded so good, and the connection between locals and popular Austin bands is definitely an experience every newcomer should partake in. notch tunes … But for those in need of more proof, these Austin music festivals are the place to be.
Austin City Limits Music Festival
The Austin City Limits Festival is nothing special as it has become one of the most famous in the whole country. While Lollapalooza and the Governor’s Island Music Festival have captured the hearts of many, there is simply something about Austin City Limits that sets it apart from the rest. The festival first appeared in 2002 and has only grown since then, stretching over four weekend days to fit into any performance. Artists come from all over the world to be part of the festival line-up and of course, guests can expect the best of Austin’s food scene as well as art exhibitions by local artists.

From south to southwest
When it comes to music festivals and their sheer size, South by Southwest is hands down the biggest in Austin. This festival becomes one with the city of Austin for a whopping nine days and not only offers music. In addition to some incredible bands, guests can also expect comedy performances, film screenings, exhibitions, and works of art. So big is the event that it encourages networking and a lot of people leave the festival after learning more about a certain creative area than when they originally bought tickets. It is the largest and most diverse festival in the Austin area.

Swimproof
If the Austin area could win an award for some of the most unique festivals, it would likely win Float Fest for them. Not only is this a music festival, it’s a free-floating weekend … literally. The festival doesn’t take place in Austin, but in San Marcos, which is only about an hour and 20 minutes south of town. The reason Austin locals are interested in taking the ride is because only the hottest rap, EDM and rock artists are in and out as artists, but they will also cruise down the San Marcos River as they do all listen to. It’s held for a weekend every year during the hot Texan summer, and it’s well worth getting dressed (so a swimsuit).

Utopia festival
Just an hour northwest of Austin is the small town of Burnet, but this town is home to a pretty big festival. Held every fall, Utopia is the perfect music festival for everyone – families included. It’s BYOB, family-friendly, open to camping, and also offers fun pastimes like disc golf, yoga, and mountain biking.

LEVITATION music festival
Another fall favorite is the LEVITATION Music Festival, held in Austin every year. The aim of the festival, according to its website, is “to create a walk-in, intimate and community-oriented event that showcases the city’s world-famous musical events”. With a wide range of artists and events, the festival turns around in October this year. A variety of artists perform at the best venues in town across Austin, creating an interactive experience that brings music to every corner of the arts district.
