An Austin bar favorite will debut in Houston tomorrow. Idle Hands opens on Wednesday November 10th in the mixed-use residential area Montrose Collective (910 Westheimer Rd.)

Idle Hands is located next to Uchi in the former Rosemont building and offers two floors for eating and drinking, highlighted by a spacious roof terrace. The bar offers live music every day, as well as Caribbean-inspired food and drinks

The original Idle Hands is owned by Austin’s Midas Willum Hospitality and is part of the busy nightlife on Rainey Street. The sister concepts include the Austin bars Found Texas, Taster’s Table Club and Eat. Drink. Texas.

Owners Matt Wolski and Andrew Hunter started Idle Hands while traveling to Colombia and Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. The Austin location opened in early 2020; When it reopened after the pandemic ended, Wolski said the tropical decor led to it becoming “the vacation everyone wanted but couldn’t take”.

“The idle hands experience is curated but relaxed,” says Wolski. “You can expect to be comfortable there no matter what you’re wearing, whether you’re going to a fancy dinner or coming back from a workout.”

Overall, the goal is to create a space that is equally attractive as a pre- or post-dinner hangout for people coming from the upscale neighborhoods restaurants as well as groups of friends who want to soak up the rooftop atmosphere. To create the right environment, the space has been extensively renovated to brighten up the surroundings.

Designed by partners in collaboration with Nisha Ackerman of Atlas Architecture of Austin and built by Houstons Construction Concepts, the details include: a white tiled floor with brass inlays on the first floor; Honey brown hardwood floors on the second level and a 13 foot LED wall that can be used for sports or by a DJ to watch videos. Up on the roof, groups can find plush sofas, while meeting evenings can linger at cocktail tables.

Cocktails are designed according to artisanal standards (proper glassware, good ice cream, fresh juices), but with the aim of being executed quickly in order to keep waiting times short. Highlights of the cocktail menu include the French 85, a riff on the classic French 75 that uses guava-infused gin, and the Rosa Mexicano with mezcal, lime juice, and raspberry sorbet.

Wolski names a few favorites among the dishes, such as the plantain chips with guacamole, the lover boy burger with a beef and chorizo terrace and a variant of the birria tacos with pulled pork.

“We spent a lot of time developing the menu,” says Wolski. “There are 10 to 12 articles. We think that everything will be surprisingly delicious. “

The bar will remain in soft opening mode throughout November as it streamlines procedures and increases staff. Around the time of the grand opening in December, Idle Hands will be adding weekend brunch and happy hour menus.

“Montrose has always been an interesting district, but it has a moment,” says Wolski. “We thought everyone would accept what Idle Hands is about.”
