AUSTIN (KXAN) – With the electric vehicle market growing rapidly, an Austin-based company is looking for smaller ones.
AYRO develops and produces electric vehicles (EVs) to enable sustainable fleets. With rapid, customizable deployments that meet specific buyer needs, AYRO is leading the transition to electric vehicles across a variety of market segments and needs.

Rod Keller, the company’s CEO, said that while it is a light truck, it is not intended to function like a typical truck.
“We’re one of the few manufacturers of electric vehicles not only in Austin, but also in the state of Texas,” said Keller. “It’s a light truck. It’s considered and labeled a low speed vehicle, an LSV, in all 50 states, which means it’s road legal. You can go up to 25 miles per hour with it. “
The vehicles are designed to replace gasoline and diesel powered pickups – the types you normally see in stadiums, resorts, and universities.
“Instead of the students going to the canteens, a number of universities are now putting them on campus and they are pre-stocked with hot and cold food and drinks,” said Keller.

And it’s estimated to be cheaper, said Keller.
“The running cost of this vehicle is half what you would normally expect from an entry-level petrol truck. It is around 30% narrower than a conventional truck, and since it does not cause any CO2 emissions, it can even be operated indoors. “
The EV market is one of the fastest growing in the country. In 2020 around 10 million electric vehicles were in use worldwide. A year earlier it was around seven million. But the market for light commercial vehicles is still pretty much untapped.
