Austin College creates tuition advantage initiative

SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) – Sherman born Josue Gonzalez has no plans to leave anytime soon.
“I really like Austin College, it’s a great campus, and I was hoping that my academic work here at Sherman would give me more involvement,” said Gonzalez.
Austin College’s new initiative called Tuition Advantage benefits Grayson County’s students like Gonzalez by cutting tuition fees to no more than $ 17,000 this academic year.
Typically, tuition averages more than $ 43,000, not including the additional 12,000 for room and board.
Also, students who qualify do not have to pay for life on campus.
“So we started thinking, why not create a study advantage for those around here to go to college and make their dreams come true,” said Lynn Womble, Ph.D., chief marketing officer at Austin College.
For some students this is an important selling point.
“It was cheaper to live here, but a lot, and I got good scholarships,” said Gonzalez.
“I’m a barrel racer, so since I’m near my home, I can continue my passion for barrel racing while getting an apprenticeship across the street,” said Tyra Bennett, a student at Austin College.
Now local students are popping up in large numbers.
“We had fifty percent more students from Grayson County this year, and we’re delighted. We really want our local students to be a part of the campus, ”said Womble.
Tuition fees are increased every year.
Womble said it’ll likely be around 3 percent.
The price for next year has not yet been determined.
