Just 30 miles outside of Dallas, Texas, Fort Worth is home to the historic historic district aptly named The Stockyards. Visiting Fort Worth is like stepping back in time to the Wild West. There are cowboys, cattle, saloons, honky tonks and much more. We recently took a trip there and have so much to share!
Here are all of the things we experienced on our western-themed trip to Fort Worth
Stay
Let’s start with the Hotel Drover. This stunning western boutique hotel definitely sets the tone for this dreamy city. The entire hotel is curated to suit a modern country western theme, and it doesn’t disappoint. We can keep telling how cute and comfortable the rooms were – because they were! But the real star of the show here is the property of the hotel. It’s the perfect place for a short vacation, wedding, or even a business trip. The property is relaxing yet stimulating. You will be constantly exploring and finding a new curated piece that you missed the first time. They describe it as a “rustic-luxurious oasis” and we couldn’t describe it better. You just have to experience it for yourself!
eat Drink
Drop the Starbucks and drive The Railcar. The café is a short but scenic walk from Hotel Drover. They have creative themed drinks and a fun neon sign that says “Welcome Abroad”. We recommend “The Bonnie” or “The Clyde!” They also have some delicious looking baked goods for your morning cup of joe!
If you are looking for great food we recommend the very popular Joe. T Garcias. Seriously, everyone kept telling us to eat there. They have a lovely garden terrace that is perfect for lunch or dinner. Please note that only cash or checks are accepted, but there are ATMs on site in case you forget this tidbit. If you’re looking for more food, try Second Rodeo Brewing on Mule Alley. There you will find a unique dining experience including truck style cabin seating! Seriously, it’s an experience!
Now for the drinks! What would a trip to Fort Worth be without a trip to Billy Bob’s famous honky-tonk? Be sure to check the schedule before heading out as you never know which famous artist might be performing there. For a round of low-key beer, head to PR’s Saloon. Finally, head dizzy to the Sidesaddle Saloon, aka the Cowgirl Bar, for tapas and happy hour!
Bonus: For a taste of Austin, Fort Worth, head to Nickel City – Fort Worth. It’s the same but different! Why? You just have to see it for yourself.
shop
Get ready to see the part! From cowboy boots, jeans, and even bolo ties, we found some amazing goodies just by walking around the stockyards. We stopped at Wrangler, Tecovas, Tucker Brown, and Proper Supply Co. Then of course there are the little obscure shops that you just look into and have a little bit of everything! We especially loved Mavericks Fine Western Wear and Flea Style for all the hidden gems on every corner! Pro tip: Get a sneak peek at Flea Style at Hotel Drover with its pop-up store called Wide Brim, which is right in the lobby. They have a customizable hat rail that you can use to add ribbons, feathers, and other small accessories to your hat. What we are really saying is be ready to shop till you drop!
experience
Let’s dive deeper into the western experience of the stockyards. Not only can you experience the rodeo while you’re there, but there are several museums too. If there’s anything cooler than a John Wayne Museum, it’s a COWGIRL Museum! And if you really want to feel like you’ve stepped back in time, you can hear the Longhorns twice a day right on Main Street. You can even see a gunfight show on the weekend! No matter how old you are, we promise you will really enjoy this trip.
Fort Worth really borrows from the history and theme of the western and we have to say we absolutely love it. We think you will too. It’s such a unique experience. It doesn’t matter if you grew up in Texas or are new here, you’ll catch yourself leaning into the Western vibes. You could even take two steps out of it!
