The Austin ISD Equity Advisory Committee set out its priorities for 2022 during its December 7th meeting and called on community members, including students, to join the group.
For the next year, the community members’ committee will focus on recruiting and retaining black and other minority workers, improving access to bilingual programs, and changing offensive school names and mascots, among other things.
“Students really need to be part of this conversation,” said committee member Lisa Flores.
Some committee members said on December 7th that the group had not focused enough on policy change in the past.
The committee will be divided into four subcommittees which, according to a presentation on December 7th, will prepare recommendations for referral to Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde.
The smaller groups will be concerned with student wellbeing, staff wellbeing, financial management, and a culture of respect. Each priority has its own subcommittee that sends recommendations to the entire committee, which then makes recommendations for the superintendent according to the presentation.
Committee member Nadia Khan pointed out that each subcommittee should have a political focus.
The board accepts applications for new members. Students, parents, and other community members can apply on the district website.
