Austin’s first Latino Art WKND features local artists

This weekend was Austin’s first Latino Art WKND, and organizers intend it won’t be the last.

Austin’s first Latino Art WKND took place on Sunday afternoon with the aim of showcasing local artists and bringing people from all backgrounds together.

“My favorite part about this whole thing is definitely bringing people from every background, every socio-economic background, every race together. When you walk into this room, you see brown and black people together,” said Monica Maldonado, founder of MAS Cultura.

At Tamale House on East Sixth Street, there was no shortage of music, food, vendors, and entertainment on Sunday afternoons.

“Lowriders, records that are played with all oldies and funk music, tamales, but the most important thing is simply that they will feel something that feels authentic and real, and that’s really because we as a team just put our souls into it” said Maldonado.

This is Austin’s first Latino Art WKND, and the organizers don’t want to be the last. MAS Cultura partnered with _OFCOLOR to create a Latino-powered art exhibition after the _OFCOLOR hosted its own Black Art Weekend on June 10th.

“It’s very, very important, especially from two different but similar cultures. There are definitely many divisions everywhere and so it is never bad when two communities come together, ”said Rudi Devino, co-founder of _OFCOLOR.

The aim of the event was to amplify Latino voices within the community and further support Austin artists.
