After more than six decades, the HEB on South Congress Avenue and Oltorf Street is being demolished and rebuilt.
The HEB at 2400 S. Congress Ave. originally opened in 1957 and was 25,000 square feet when it was founded, according to a press release. It was later expanded to 69,000 square meters.
The store is being demolished to make way for a new 145,000 square foot facility in the same location. According to the press release, HEB will open a temporary store in the neighboring Twin Oaks Shopping Center.
Construction work on the new facility is expected to take two years.

“Our vision has always been to create a store our customers will be proud of, an iconic place that reflects the personality and vibrancy of the South Congress community,” said Cathy Harm, HEB Group’s vice president for Central Texas, in one Press release. “This business is an important part of this neighborhood and we hope this new design expresses our deep gratitude for our loyal customers who have supported our business for more than 60 years.”
The new store will have three floors. Two floors are used for shopping and dining. In addition, there will be a three-story car park with more than 600 parking spaces, according to the press release.
True Texas BBQ will open an in-store restaurant, according to the announcement.
