Bringing community groups together to fight food insecurity

Jennifer Jones Austin is one of the most outstanding New Yorkers in the fight against poverty and hunger. The Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencys unites grassroots and community groups to provide New Yorkers, especially New Yorkers of color, greater opportunities for education, employment, and equality.

She joins In Focus to discuss the work the FPWA is doing in the fight against hunger. Jones Austin talks about how to bring companies together to put their skills to use where they’re needed most. But it also addresses what is missing.

She says while local, state, and state governments are doing some work to end hunger, it is clearly not enough as the pandemic has exposed our weaknesses in housing and feeding New Yorkers. While the number of food insecure New Yorkers – or people who really don’t know where their next meal is coming from – has nearly doubled, the number of food insecure children has increased from one in five to one in four.

She passionately argues why more work needs to be done and more resources need to be made available to end hunger.
