Central Texas Food Bank requests donations as need increases

The Central Texas Food Bank is well on its way to spending 10 times more this month than it did before the pandemic. Blame it on the need to feed more people, along with inflation and supply chain problems.

They saw a greater need to feed people during the pandemic, according to Mark Jackson of the Central Texas Food Bank. As that number begins to decline, there are more needy people in the region than ever and the food bank is finally putting together 11 million more meals than usual this year.

Jackson said their projections show they will decrease 20% of their needs. In an average year, the board budgets about $ 100,000 in addition to donations. Now it plans to spend $ 1,000,000 to supplement the donations. The Tafel says it needs to procure certain types of food in order to distribute it, so monetary donations are preferred. In addition, the table can get the food at a heavily discounted price.

The Central Texas Food Bank expects to ship nearly 400,000 this November

As of 2019, Central Texas Food Bank has seen demand for its services grow 26%, with one in seven now starving every day.

“Our big thing is that all we can do is educate people and let them know that we can buy a whole half peanut butter compared to what you buy at the grocery store and we get a much better price for it so you can make big money can have greater impact when you donate [cash]”Said Jackson.

$ 1 provides four meals for the needy. The Beaumont Foundation is currently collecting donations for the Christmas season and using it to make the eight meals. These donations help one in seven people in our area who are food insecure.

“One in five children in the 21 counties we serve is at risk of starvation. We just find it totally unacceptable,” said Jackson. “When people get up during campaigns to help us raise money like Giving Tuesday, they’re making sure we can feed the kids and go to bed with a full stomach.”
