Eat up this list of new restaurants coming to San Antonio

After almost two years of pandemic breaks and total closings, San Antonio is enjoying a new era of food history I’ve already felt it.
From rotating sushi bars to Sinaloa-style rolls, Mediterranean food to Caribbean cuisine, there is a lot to consider. So we’ve put together a list of the upcoming spots that have been causing quite a stir lately.
Some openings are well known to the San Antonio food scene, such as the growing El Remedio, Jerk Shack, Cullum’s Attaboy, Sari Sari, and Box Street. Others like Kura, Kerbey Lane Cafe, and Chick’nCone add the Alamo City to their location map.

Kura operates hundreds of restaurants with revolving sushi bars in Japan and about 30 in the United States. By spring 2022, San Antonio will appear on the Kura map. News from the San Antonio location was first announced in June, but a timeframe for its opening wasn’t announced until earlier this month. Kura will be located in the Alamo Quarry Market in the place of Papouli’s Greek grill.

The Pearl will be welcoming a Mediterranean grill house called Ladino next year, a new concept from Austin-based Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group. It is run by head chef Berty Richter and offers a mix of Middle Eastern and Balkan cuisine. The menu includes “freshly made pita and other regional specialties,” including mezze and vegetables. Ladino will be in the place where Il Sogno Osteria used to be, which closed in 2018.
Owners Joshua and Martha Palacios started the business in 2017 as a ceviche and delivery service, but in recent years have added birria tacos – the fried corn tortilla taco that’s filled with cheese and braised meat and served with a dip broth. More than 50,000 social media fans later, El Remedio is using a pre-order model that sells out quickly to keep business running smoothly. Later this month they will also be expanded with a new food truck and a dedicated space.

When El Remedio owner Joshua Palacios originally announced in August that he was launching a sushi extension to his food truck empire, he expected it to be just another restaurant on wheels. Now, months later, Palacios and his wife and Remedio co-owner Martha Palacios are officially opening their first brick and mortar restaurant in Stone Oak. The new restaurant will serve around 10 types of bread rolls as well as traditional Mexican dishes. The full-fledged restaurant will also have a full bar and banda bands will be regularly invited to top off the party.
A new chicken and waffle joint is rising – and presents the classic combination in a cone. Chick’nCone is located on 1919 N Shepherd Drive.
Chick’nCone
The Pennsylvania-based franchise is known for hand-held chicken and waffles. The chain’s owners weren’t immediately available to answer requests for comment, but the Chick’nCone website notes that the brand is “expanding rapidly”. A new submission to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation shows a Chick’nCone project registered at 223 E Hildebrand Avenue with a completion date in April 2022

The original Jerk Shack location in Matyear 117 closed in September, but the nationally acclaimed restaurant is still growing. Jerk Shack continues north on 10234 State Highway 151. The new facility is expected to open in December. The Jerk Shack is also opening a restaurant in downtown Hemisfair, although an opening date for that location is unclear.

Cullum’s Attaboy reappears with a stationary location at 111 Kings Court. The cozy place previously housed NOLA brunch and beignets, which moved into new stalls at 720 E Mistletoe in February. Owner Chris Cullum tells MySA the city might recognize the name for its popular burger concept. Prior to acquiring the Kings Court space, Cullum served juicy smash-style burgers from an Airstream trailer that was sometimes parked in front of Cullum’s Attagirl, Attaboy’s sister restaurant. Cullum says Attaboy has room for more menu items with its own room and kitchen.
Box Street Social is aiming to open the company’s first brick and mortar store, Box Street All Day, at Hemisfair before the end of the year.

Chef Edward Garcia says the pandemic halted the original Box Street opening in the spring of 2020, but he and co-owner Daniel Treviño are still bringing the restaurant to Hemisfair ’68, the mixed-use development near the Tower of the Americas. Garcia and Treviño took the time to rethink the design in response to the pandemic with help from Caroline Garcia-Bowman. The restaurant, which Garcia describes as a “coastal” feeling, will have 100 seats outside and another 100 inside.
The chef jokes that it will be the perfect atmosphere for a “third or fourth date”, relaxed but still impressive. Menu items have an average price of $ 12.

The Sari-Sari Supper Club is slated to open near Highway 151 and Military in the fall and is an extension of the original Sari Sari, a Filipino restaurant on 5700 Wurzbach Road. In the meantime, the owners Adrian and Camille De Los Reyes are holding preliminary events at the Wurzbach site to give fans a foretaste.

San Antonio Diner will soon meet Allora and Arrosta, two sister concepts of the celebrated restaurateur Peter Selig. Selig’s culinary careers in San Antonio include Biga on the Banks, Acenar, and the Maverick Texas Brasserie.
Described as a sophisticated, “stylish full-service Italian seaside restaurant,” Allora will have one of the largest al fresco dining rooms in the city on the first floor of the Credit Human building on 1703 Broadway. Arrosta, the “fast-casual cafe or tavola calda”, will be located in the adjacent Oxbow building on 1803 Broadway.

An exact opening date has not yet been announced, but the restaurant is slated to open this fall in Los Patios, an oasis of function rooms and offices in the woods near Salado Creek, according to a press release. The couple Francisco Estrada and Lizzeth Martinez started the concept more than three years ago as a food truck. Naco’s focus on authentic Mexican street food, such as traditional tortas and chilaquiles, earned the company several food awards in the city.
Much of the menu that made Naco so popular is carried over to the restaurant when it opens. There will also be some new offerings, such as all-day chilaquiles with new sauce options, including almond mole; Eggs Benedict with Brisket and Huitlacoche; and Mexican-inspired croissants with guava and cheese.
