BASTROP COUNTY, Texas (Austin Business Journal / KXAN) – Elon Musk’s tunneling startup The Boring Co. is using another company to buy land in the Bastrop area.

Property records filed with Bastrop County indicate that Gapped Bass LLC purchased 73 acres northwest of Bastrop in May. While this company appears to have no direct association with the tunneling company, Gapped Bass LLC has ties to top executives at The Boring Co. as well as the company’s Pflugerville address.

California-based The Boring Co., which has made global headlines with its unique approach to digging giant tunnels for transportation and shipping, has tacitly built a presence in central Texas in recent months, despite the company’s plans for the region are not yet fully clear.

Job postings recently pointed to plans to develop an autonomous tunnel boring machine and mentioned the company’s research and development site in Bastrop, although specific details were not disclosed in the listing. These property records give at least an indication of how much space the company needs for its research and development activities.

Last year, Tesla CEO Musk focused on the Lone Star State – the automaker announced last summer that it would be opening its next Gigafactory in the Del Valle area just outside Austin.

The factory will build Tesla’s upcoming cybertruck. There will also be a second US factory for the Model Y small SUV.

Additionally, Musk’s SpaceX has its roots in the far south of Texas and has conducted several test flights for missiles from the region this year.
