A fire at the Ponderosa Pet Resort in Georgetown resulted in the death of 75 dogs on September 18, according to a statement from the city of Georgetown.
“We know that every dog who died in this fire was a valued family member, so our hearts go out to all those affected by this tragic fire,” said Georgetown fire chief John Sullivan in the statement. “We believe the dogs at the facility likely died from inhaling smoke, not the flames of the fire. We are working as soon as possible to have the investigation (completed) so that the pets can be returned to their grieving family members as soon as possible. “
The news release stated that fire investigators were working to determine the cause and origin of the fire at 2518 N. Austin Ave. to determine, as well as whether a fire extinguishing system or smoke alarm was on site. According to the city’s press release, federal, state and Georgetown fire regulations do not require “sprinkler systems for facility use and size,” where the fire broke out around 11 p.m. and Georgetown fire crews were on site in less than 5 minutes’ protocol.
According to the city’s release, the facility will contact family members of the dogs to make arrangements to retrieve them.
