Independent living community is turning to robots to fill staffing needs

Robots could fill positions that they had open for years.

AUSTIN, Texas – An independent community uses a robot to address its staffing shortage.

Sunday brunch at Longhorn Village’s Lifeplan Community came with an extra helping hand, or should I say pair of wheels.

“I was totally surprised,” said resident Roseanne Palin. “The first night it rolled down I said, ‘Oh my god, R2D2, what is that?'”

“I am pleased to introduce our new robot to you,” said CEO Deidre Kinsey. “It was recently called Levo by our residents, a kind of spin-off from Bevo.”

Kinsey brought the robot with her to hook her horns on the staffing issue in their independent living dining rooms.

“When we got out of the pandemic and had to build this staff, we had to say, ‘Hey, what are we going to do?’ We have to be in the fast lane with things like robots, “Kinsey said.

The robot developed by Richtech Robotics works in a controlled manner. You put the food on the stand, enter the destination and when it arrives, the waitress puts the food on the table.

“That way we don’t always have to lug trays, walk around with tray stands and time goes by faster,” says restaurant service manager Emily Hart.

The innovation and helpfulness are the reason Pailin loves Levo.

“When I was in college, I did this part-time,” Pailin said. “I know how hard you work.”

Levo has been helping lift the load for two weeks. Not only does it bring food, but it also sings happy birthday. Kinsey said they plan to bring in more robotic help to clear the tables and sweep the floors.

“There is now a lot of demand for the robot called Dusty,” Kinsey said. “So we’re on that list.”

The robots could eventually replace one or two employees and some of them fill positions that have been open for over seven years.

“Our intent is never to really replace people,” said Kinsey. “Our business is interacting with our residents.”

From Levo’s point of view, the interactions are enjoyed, especially when the food looks this good.

Longhorn Village, an independent community, is reaching out to this robot and others to help with their staffing problem.
