AUSTIN (KXAN) – Work is scheduled to begin on the site of a future community that aims to help homeless Austinites move off the street. The state sanctioned site will be located on 780 State Highway 183 in south Austin.

The Esperanza Community complex is being developed by The Other Ones Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to providing accessible work, case management and assistance to the local homeless population. According to TOOF, the facility will temporarily accommodate around 150 people.

When it’s done, Esperanza will provide toilets / showers, access to food, laundry facilities, and resources for mental and physical health, according to TOOF.

One of TOOF’s job opportunities for residents is cleaning homeless campsites. The foundation reports that since it began in 2018, it has helped remove 1 million pounds of trash from Austin’s green spaces.

The only requirement for employment at TOOF is that you are at least 18 years old and currently homeless.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Monday at 11.30 a.m. KXAN will stream the event in this story, on KXAN.com, on the official KXAN Facebook page and in the KXAN app.
