A long rumored and highly anticipated boutique hotel is finally arriving in Montrose. After more than a decade of speculation, a new, design-oriented hotel in the heart of the museum district is about to check in.
Synchronized Hotel Saint Augustine, the new inn will be located on Loretto Drive – next to the Menil Collection – and courtesy of Bunkhouse, the hip Austin-based hospitality company known for its attention to design, music and community experiences. Bunkhouse’s first Houston presence, Hotel Saint Augustine, is slated to open in the fall of 2023, the company said.
“The Hotel Saint Augustine will be a unique addition to the Montrose neighborhood and the Richmond Avenue corridor,” Menil spokeswoman Sarah Hobson told CultureMap.
“The spacious hotel, which is only two stories high so that it stays true to scale with the surrounding buildings, will liven up this corner of the district with new amenities and offers.
“Interestingly, John and Dominique de Menil’s original plans for the museum included a nearby hotel for visitors. The Menil Foundation is proud to support this Marchbanks Company and Bunkhouse project. “
With 71 rooms on two floors, a function room, restaurant and bar, the hotel promises eclectic design and lush landscaping, according to a press release. Marchbanks Company, which has worked with Bunkhouse on properties in Texas such as the Hotel Saint Cecilia and Hotel Magdalena in Austin and the Hotel Havana in San Antonio, will handle overall development.
Design, a bunkhouse column, is led by the renowned architecture firm Lake | Flato; the company previously worked with Bunkhouse at the Hotel San José and Hotel Magdalena in Austin and at the Hotel San Cristobal in Todos Santos, Mexico. In a premiere for Bunkhouse, the Post Company design studio will lead the interior design of the project, according to a press release.
Austin-based landscape architects Ten Eyck are working the tree-lined existing space into the hotel’s exterior, designing the grounds and gardens across the property, creating winding pathways and outdoor spaces that are integrated around the tree canopy.
Texans familiar with the Bunkhouse brand will recognize the seven (of the nine) hotels in the Lone Star State, including five in Austin, one in San Antonio, and one in Marfa.
In 2008, the popular and popular Houston website revealed Swamplot Bunkhouse’s concept designs for a five-story, 75-room hotel complex planned for 1634 Westheimer Rd. (between Dunlavy and Mandell).
Fans of stylish hotels can now expect to stay in one of the Inner Loop’s most anticipated hotspots.
