The new school, designed by Stantec Architecture, is the last project to be part of the voter-approved 2018 bond program, said Clint McLain, the district’s assistant chief financial officer.

“Planning for this school began a few years ago and was formalized last year,” McLain said during the event. “The school will be our first two-story elementary school.”

The former building of the Ninth Grade Center is currently located on the property and will be demolished before construction of the new campus begins.

After its completion, the school will accept around 850 students and replace the Carl Schurz and Seele primary schools built in 1935 and 1950.

Funding for the school was included in NBISD’s 2018 bond election, with $ 29 million earmarked for construction. The final cost of the Cadence McShane contract is $ 27,362,822, according to the district.

During the event, pupils from the Carl Schurz und Seele primary schools took part in the groundbreaking ceremony. The students who were from kindergarten through second grade will attend school when it is completed.

The district expects the school to open in August 2023.

“I’m excited because with this building we are starting a new chapter and training countless elementary school students in the future,” said Wes Clark, President of the NBISD Board of Directors. “We look forward to the day in autumn 2023 when we will open these doors.”
