PARIS (AP) – As weary fashionistas made it to the end of 96 physical and digital spring-summer Paris Fashion Week shows, Saturday’s catwalks provided the spark to keep the energy going despite the rain and gray skies. Some of the world’s best designers channeled humor, bright colors, innovative design techniques, and even animated films into ever imaginative displays.
Here are some highlights of the prt-à-porter collection for spring / summer 2022:
VIVIENNE WESTWOOD DESPITE THE DESCRIPTION
Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood was typically eccentric.
Kronthaler mixed glam rock references from Westwood’s heyday in the 80s with historical reflection and a wink. Kronthaler created 66 fashion chaos and hosted one of the funniest shows of this Paris fashion season.
Models presented on a plasma screen that projected enlarged images of architecture and textiles presented styles that defied almost any description.
Did the pale wedding dress with the invisible frame in the back look like a tent or was it supposed to be reminiscent of a piece of clothing that had been hung to dry on a clothesline? A huge white historical hat cut a fine shape, but on closer inspection it was made from a cuddly toy with the face of an old bearded man.
But while the humor was undeniable, there were also plenty of moments of sublime fashion design. A trompe l’oeil dress had pale blue fabric that “floated” abstractly on its front. The simplest looks were some of the best too, including a draped white dress with a gorgeous dynamic frenzy of materials.
REALAGE BECOMES CREATIVE
The fashion-conscious house of Tokyo-based Kunihiko Morinaga has built a huge fan base in Japan for his daring concepts that combine art and fashion.
Morinaga did not disappoint on Saturday.
The award-winning designer offered fashion editors a collaboration with Oscar-nominated Japanese animated filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda. It was a short fashion film set in the country of “U” – with clothes reminiscent of the groundbreaking science fiction film “Tron”.
Polygonal silhouettes made of fabric triangles in its characteristic patchwork were immersed in the fictional universe of a kind of futuristic Japan.
They were made from vintage clothing and reflective high-tech fabrics that, according to the house, were made using a special adhesive technique. The matching platform sandals for the designs were decorated with the same motif. It was an interesting comment on how the digital world has affected the fashion industry.
Morinaga said the idea of the show started when he was asked by Hosoda to create the virtual stage costume for a concert scene in BELLE (2021), his upcoming animated feature film.
