Oslo architecture firm on July 27th last week Snohetta Officially announces a design program to expand the Joslyn Art Museum museum NS Omaha, NebraskaThe foundation stone was laid on the same day.. Snøhetta is a local partner Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture (APMA), renovation of existing office space and revitalization of 3 hectares of public gardens on the site of the facility.
A landmark cultural asset in Nebraska’s largest city, the Joslyn Art Museum has been in Omaha since 1931 when it was blessed with the widow of printing mogul George Joslyn. The current style of the institution is shaped by the original art deco Buildings designed by architects John and Alan MacDonald and added in 1994 Foster + Partner– –Sir Norman Foster’s first project in the United States. The museum now houses the Philip G. Schlager Contemporary Art Collection.
The main purpose of developing a new concept for the Snohetta and APMA campuses was to increase the available gallery space by a third. The architect also attempted to fully reconstruct the building’s entrance sequence, relocating the main access point to Davenport Street at the north end of the site. New access roads and elevated sculpture gardens lead visitors to the main entrance of the museum. This entrance is protected from the weather by the projections in the gallery above.

The southeast corner of the site has also been renovated, which makes the museum more attractive for guests and passers-by. Retaining walls are lowered to reveal views of the original monument, its monumental staircase, and the new lawn with native species.
The new building itself has a dramatically curved facade that seems to float above the walls of the granite garden and forms a striking contrast to the well-planted foundations of the two old buildings on campus. In the words of Snohetta, it evokes “the formation of an impressive cloud over the great people”. Not just the plains, but also the deep overhangs and the horizontal representation of the local prairie architecture. “
The additional weightlessness is emphasized by the clear glass walls on the ground floor, which surround the new lobby of the museum, shops and multi-purpose rooms. The massive walls surrounding the upstairs gallery are clad in rosy precast concrete that mirrors the Georgian pink marble used to build the monument in the 1930s.

The day gallery, which displays a significant portion of Joslyn’s extensive collection, is being complemented by new classrooms and meeting rooms, and the museum hopes to foster new connections in the community. In the words of Snohetta’s director and architect Kate Larsen, the redesign of the interior and exterior of the facility creates “a beautiful and cozy new entrance door to the museum and invites many generations.”
Snohetta’s most famous museum project in the US is still around Added in 2016 To the campus of Mario Botta from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) the company was awarded a number of similar fees over the past year.
