Shugga hello

Kathy Leslie (left) and Sandra Austin

The fact that we are entering the time of thanking and giving presents is evident from the fact that many of the upcoming food-related events revolve around charity. We thought you’d like to hear about three of these upcoming opportunities, from an event to celebrate the life of a devoted local restaurateur, to a fundraiser for the Nashville Food Project, to an opportunity to give some children a happier Christmas.

On Thursday, November 18, Shugga Hi Bakery and Cafe is hosting a “Free Community Harvest Meal” to honor the life and legacy of co-founder Sandra E. Austin, who passed away in late September. Austin’s sister and co-founder, Kathy Leslie, along with Shugga Hi staff, local elected officials and volunteers, will be handing out approximately 800 meals to needy members of the community. Meals are sponsored by Shugga Hi and generous donors and distributed from 11am until the food is used up.

No registration, ID or qualification is required to pick up a meal and partake in the celebration of Austin’s legacy. So if you feel like you need a meal and want to honor her memory, stop by Shugga Hi at 1000 Dickerson Pike. Our thoughts go out to the entire Shugga family, and kudos for this loving gesture in honor of Austin.

Made scratches

Over at the Nashville Food Project, they have their very first Scratch Made Market planned along with a cake sale to raise funds for the organization that serves thousands of meals to community residents in need. The event will take place on Sunday, November 21, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the NFP offices at 5904 California Avenue in the Nations.

At the Scratch Made Market, they sell all sorts of fun hosiery like herbal salts, ointments, teas, etc. made from the crops from the NFP gardens. They will also hold their annual pre-loved cookbook sale on this day if you want to replenish your kitchen library. They will also host a few guest vendors including La’Camera House, the herbalist and founder of The Healing Oracle Herbal Apothecary. It grows on the Community Farm in Mill Ridge. The Sewing Training Academy, a training program run by Catholic charities, will also sell aprons, etc.

As for cake sales, people can pre-order an assorted pastry box for $ 50 for pickup at Scratch Made (just in time for Thanksgiving). NFP’s food team will be in charge of the baked goods, but the boxes will also contain contributions from some of Nashville’s finest pastry chefs and bakers, including Katie Fair from Butcher & Bee, Alyssa Gangeri from The Butter Milk Ranch, Jaime Miller from Lockeland Table , Claire Meneely from Dozen Bakery, Rebekah Turshen from City House and Lisa Marie White from Biscuit Love.

What’s specifically in your box will be a delicious sweet surprise, but here is a list of some of the things you might come across:

Fried pumpkin and brown Butterbundt cake slices

  • Cardamom Kuri Pumpkin Loaf Slices
  • Pumpkin butterscotch blondies
  • Beetroot Mud Cake Slices
  • Lemon curd crumble cake slices
  • Bay leaf blondes
  • Mini pumpkin pie
  • Mini apple pie with apple crumble topping
  • Mini lemon and lime quark tartlets

For more information or to pre-order your delicious box, visit the event website. Don’t dawdle or the goodies baskets will be sold out before you get there!

Sam's Toy Drive

Sam’s sports grill and Sam’s place organize a toy campaign for foster children at all locations until December 10th. They collect new unwrapped toys for children between the ages of newborns and 18 years, which they will distribute to foster children before Christmas. And there is a reward for your good deed. When you drop off a toy at any of their Middle Tennessee locations, they will receive a $ 5 gift card to use on your next visit.
