Tesla: The body structure of the Model Y will differ between the California, Texas factories

Tesla CEO Elon Musk told investors Monday that the OEM’s factories in Austin, Texas and Berlin, Germany, when finished, will produce a different Model Y body than the Fremont, California plant.
“The Model Y made here and in Berlin will have a cast front body and a cast rear body,” said Musk. The Fremont-based Model Y “wears a cast rear body but not a cast front body,” Musk said.
Musk said Tesla also planned to equip the Texas and Germany Ys models with a “structural package” of 4,680 battery cells. He said this offered both mass and cost reductions.
“We don’t expect this to be the only way to get things going,” Musk said. He said the OEM had developed a backup plan that included a non-structural battery pack with 2170 cells, but ultimately wanted to use the structural pack and 4680 cells in mass production. This is the easiest and cheapest option, he said.
“Internal crash tests of our structural packaging architecture with a one-piece front molding were successful,” Tesla told investors in a presentation slide for the second quarter.
“The Model Ys made in Texas and Berlin will be very similar to the Model Ys we are currently making,” said Musk. However, he said Tesla had made “significant improvements” in making manufacturing easier.
