A taco shop chain based in Austin, Texas has found a place in Richmond for its first foray into Virginia as part of a nationwide expansion plan.
Torchy’s Tacos signed a lease at the Carytown Exchange Mall at 3550 W. Cary St.
Torchy’s was born in the Austin food truck scene in 2006 and now has over 80 locations across the country. Last year it announced it had received an unspecified amount of investor capital to fuel efforts to open in 10 new states by 2024.
A Torchy spokeswoman confirmed that they intend to open in Carytown in 2022 and to open a location in Charlottesville later this year. The two locations are Torchy’s first in Virginia and the third in the mid-Atlantic after an outpost in Raleigh that opened earlier this spring.

The Carytown site will be one of the first of the Austin, Texas-based chain in Virginia.
In addition to tacos and breakfast tacos, the Torchy menu includes burritos, salads, and fries and queso. The chain also serves margaritas, mixed drinks, beer, and wine.
Torchy’s rents 4,700 square feet near the intersection of West Cary Street and South Nansemond Street. Thalhimer’s David Crawford and James Ashby IV are listed on the Carytown Exchange.
Torchy’s is the fifth tenant under contract on the $ 40 million project. Sleep Number, Chase Bank, CityRow and Virginia ABC signed leases for the project after Publix opened late last year.
Torchy’s is joining at least one other taco shop outside of town to expand into the market. Earlier this spring, Cabo Fish Taco, a Charlotte-based taco restaurant, also signed up for a location in Richmond at The Summit at 3022 W. Broad St.
