If singer-songwriting is your passion, give Greenville-based Darby Wilcox and her peep show bandmates some Greenwood love during Saturday’s highly anticipated Wag & Jam. It’s a ticket benefit concert in support of the Humane Society of Greenwood.
Darby Wilcox and The Peep Show, as well as Susto from Charleston, will be on their feet for this open air concert at Uptown Market. It’s going to be a great night for indie uptown for sure.
Wilcox, now 35, has been part of the Greenville music scene since she was 18 when she started performing on open mic nights.
Your current band has evolved over the past six or seven years and even has a Greenwood connection to musician Steven Cathcart on Pedal Steel. Wilcox and The Peep Show have also recorded new songs in Cathcart’s studio.
Wilcox’s soulful singing and fearlessly honest songwriting have won their fans and nods from the likes of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.
“My music is very raw and emotional,” explains Wilcox. “I’ve made music all my life and grew up listening to classical and church music. But I taught myself to play the guitar when I was 12 or 13, and that’s when I started writing songs. “
During the show, listen to four brand new songs that will eventually appear on a new EP that promises to be a little “more electric” than Wilcox previously did, including their 2018 LP, 11:11.
“The band really started to consolidate in 2016,” said Wilcox. “My music is like a timestamp.”
Among the four new tracks is “Ten Ways to Cope”.
“It’s about leaving a partner who wanted me to be there, but at the time I couldn’t even be there for myself,” said Wilcox. “… It’s about coping, not the healthiest way. … Many of the songs are like life lessons for me. “
Wilcox said the pandemic gave her much-needed time to focus on important things, including her own struggles with addiction and sobriety.
“I’ve been sober since May 2020,” said Wilcox. “I used the silence of the pandemic to gain consistency and to get into an established routine. I played 15 to 21 shows a month before that and worked all the time. … The area I work in revolves around being in a bar. I guess where I am right now. Perspective and honesty are my core. “
But wait, there’s more!
