Rather than gathering on the Texas State Capitol grounds where it is difficult to track attendance and establish proper security guidelines, this year’s Texas Book Festival (TBF) will include both face-to-face sessions (meetings at locations like the Austin Central Library and the Symphony Square). The non-profit, founded in 1995, continues to pursue its vision of inspiring Texans to read, with the fully virtual festival reaching more than 75,000 people last year and guests and creatives such as Matthew McConaughey (Green light), David Chang (Momofuku Restaurant Group) and Kevin Kwan (Crazy rich Asians). An even higher number of visitors is expected this year.
The festival already has its List of guest authorsincluding Pulitzer Prize winner Colson Whitehead, American Book Award winner Sandra Cisneros, and 2016 Kirkus Prize finalist Amor Towles.
In addition to a “robust, diverse range of established, emerging and debut literary talents”, TBF promises the presence of local food trucks, children’s programs, book signing sessions and the annual lit crawl. The events take place in outer tents and visitors are cordially invited to visit the exhibitor marketplace either in person or virtually. Starting October 23, attendees will be able to take part in online events and panels, including the Texas Teen Book Festival, with the in-person portion beginning the weekend of October 30.
“Entry into the hybrid space gives everyone the opportunity to take part in a large, lively and diverse festival program,” says Matthew Patin, TBF’s literary director, in a recent press release. “We are ready to bring the festival back into the real world and keep a virtual format that so many enjoy. “
