CENTRAL TEXAS (KXAN) – A storm wave shook several inches of rain in the Austin area on Sunday, causing flooding, some leaks and dangerous driving conditions.

A Flash flood warning was in effect for Central Travis County until 5:15 p.m. Sunday after more than 4 inches of rain fell in an hour.

This downpour caused a number of issues that were videotaped in the Austin area.

Texas Capitol

Inches of rain, which fell rapidly in the Austin metropolitan area on Sunday, resulted in leaks and even flooding in areas of the Texas Capitol.

A video tweeted by Sloan Byerly from inside the Capitol annex showed water dripping from the ceiling.

Another video showed inches of water on the back hall floor, Byerly said.

On the latest review, the State Preservation Board worked with the governor’s office and other agencies to address the problems caused by the storm in the capital.

“Everyone’s hands on deck,” said Governor Greg Abbott in his tweet.

A statement from the board of directors said a rainwater drain was clogged and dammed water in the Capitol extension.

Although the damage has not yet been fully assessed, the flooding appeared to be contained in hallways E2.200 and E2.300.

KXAN saw crews working to purify the water and dry out the affected areas.

The board’s statement went on to say that the staff will work all evening to minimize disruptions to legal business on Monday.

The video captured by Jonathan Shechand at UT also showed water gushing up from the ground and into the air at the Gregory Gym on campus Sunday afternoon. It appeared to show a flood on the first floor of the gym as students looked from the floors above.

KXAN has reached out to university spokespersons for information and will update this when we hear something.
