Here’s some of what’s happening in Austin’s culinary scene, as emerged from numerous PR releases, words on the digital street, and even the occasional (verified) IRL tap.

Yes, it is your food news buffet for the third week of September, the second year of this stupid epidemic …

Give our newest neighbors a fine, caffeinated greeting …

Crazy, Big Apple. It seems that the number 3 bottled coffee brand in the US (behind Starbucks and Dunkin ‘Donuts) – the javali powerhouse called Super Coffee – recently moved their former NYC headquarters right here to the ATX. (You are at 1005 St. Elmo.) On the one hand we say “Hello and welcome!” OTOH, we have had enough coffee suppliers in this town, haven’t we? But listen: Super Coffee was named to the list of Best Workplaces 2021 by Inc., which recognizes brands that have done the most to support their employees and keep them through a turbulent year. So in our book they are A-OK, it doesn’t matter …

Still Austin Whiskey Co. (in The Yard at 440 E. St. Elmo) is celebrating its fourth anniversary on Saturday, September 18, 12-10 p.m., with the Bearded Baking Company having the best brunch in town offers (until 3 p.m.) and live music by Pike & Sutton at 7 p.m. …

We hear through the grapevine that the owners of the Asti Trattoria, Lisa and Emmett Fox, have sold Hyde Park’s beloved Italian shop to their wine curator, Chris Moore, who, as far as we know, will continue the delicious reign of the venue in this location. And so, yes, with Asti and Quacks Bakery across the street and Julios and the new Curra location and Uncle Nickys and Hyde Park Bar & Grill and Antonellis close by – we mean holy shit, what a neighborhood!

In the meantime in Crestview: Will Bird Bird Biscuit – long announced it will take over the place where Thunderbird Coffee on Koenig once was – will this delicious supplier of bread and chickens and more actually be opening soon? The Magic 8 ball still says “Uncertain, Ask Again”, but we saw a new sign on the building that said, COMING SOON, so our salivary glands are already getting down to business …

I don’t know, boo … can nibbles give you more nibbles?

Dude! Trudy’s is honoring National Queso Day by partnering with Earlybird CBD to offer a hemp-infused Loaded Queso from September 20-26. Srsly, Chef Julian Rodarte has updated the popular dish to include a legal 5 mg THC and 50 mg CBD from Earlybird’s full-spectrum tincture. Youuuuuude …

In other philanthropic news, the Ronald McDonald House in central Texas is hosting its 32nd Annual Bandana Ball, and it’s virtual – Friday, September 17th! Support and enjoy everything from the comfort of your own home, with signature cocktails, a tempting meal from Austin Catering, music from DJ Gatsby and a live auction of wonderful merchs and experiences via Zoom. Bonus: The silent auction is open to everyone, even if you are not registered for the ball …

And be informed, gregarious citizen, these community-loving Buzz Mill honchos are about to unveil the Buzz Mill East Side (at Seventh & Waller) venue, where they partnered with Brunch Bird (part of the Plow Burger family) to Bring another fine-coffee-and-beer-and-good-nominated spot to the neighborhood …

And we’ll tell you more about that soon, but right now, nota bene: Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden (the best of Rainey Street, we would pass) are rocking a three-day Oktoberfest celebration from September 23rd …

But this weekend, yo, there’s a Dunk Smash Birthday Bash in the dog-friendly Yard Bar … and this awesome Pitmaster’s Potluck by LeRoy & Lewis … and, oh! Both the breakfast powerhouse Patika in the South Lamar and the sushi forward TenTen in the West Sixth offer new menus that were recently unveiled for maximum autumnal delicacies …

And you already know the winners of this year’s Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival, right?

And that the Texas-based but world-conquering whiskey savants of the Garrison Brothers are in the middle of their Bourbon takeover of America in 2021?

And that Austin’s own Julie Holden won the Pillsbury Bake-Off in 2021?

[Note: Aaaaah! So! Much! News!]

Now, eat the best you can, tip like it’s going out of style, and watch out for those pesky Delta flavors.
