Abilene Chamber of Commerce names new leadership

The Abilene Chamber of Commerce announced its board for 2021-2022 in a press release on Monday.

With effect from October 1, the Chamber’s Executive Committee will be chaired by: Laura Moore, Chair of the Grace Museum; Mike Fernandez, elected chairman of the Texas National Bank; Kelly Jay, secretary / treasurer of Texas Media Inc .; and Marshall Morris, immediate past chairman of First Financial Bank.

Also one-year terms of office on the Executive Committee will be: Dr. Kelsi Mangrem from the Holland Hearing Center; Shaun Martin of Atmos Energy; and Taylor Sturgis of the Key Appraisal Group.

“I couldn’t be more excited to continue the solid history and tradition that the leaders built before me and work to ensure that the Chamber, its operational departments, and the Abilene community get the best of them,” said Moore in the press release.

Sweetwater banker elected to State Council

SWEETWATER – Mike Fernandez, President of Sweetwater-based Texas National Bank, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Independent Bankers Association of Texas for a three-year term.

Fernandez has served on the board since his appointment in 2019 and will now continue as an elected member. He accepted the position at the Association’s 47th Annual Meeting, held in Austin, September 18-21.

Fernandez joined Texas National Bank in 2012, where he began as Vice President of Lending. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Louisiana State University and an MBA from Texas A&M University – San Antonio, and is a graduate of Southern Methodist University’s Southwestern Graduate School of Banking.

Application wanted for the program to promote environmental quality

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service recently announced that its first application deadline for its Environmental Quality Incentives program will be October 29th, with a second deadline of February 11th.

Applications for the program – which helps farm producers conserve nature – are accepted year-round, but the deadlines are used to rank the eligible programs.

Manufacturers can submit applications to their local USDA service center. USDA customers can submit applications to Farmers.gov.

Funeral Directors Life named Top Employee Company

Funeral Directors Life was recently named one of the Best Texas Companies in 2021 by Texas Monthly and the Best Companies Group.

The award is based on a nationwide survey and recognizes the state’s 100 best employers through measures related to workplace policies, practices, and demographics, as well as an employee survey.

Funeral Directors Life ranked 7th in the state for medium-sized companies this year, after 13th in 2020.
