Austin businesses fear homeless community is moving north

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The latest Proposition B quote listing shows that the Austin Police Department has published 37 quotes since mid-June. Most of them come from camps outside Congress, Riverside, and South Lamar.

North Austin companies that are in the immediate vicinity of Cedar Park near the US Highway 183 and State Highway 45 flyovers said they are starting to build homeless camps.

“You can tell where the city limits are between here and Cedar Park,” said Tom Mckay. “As soon as you cross the city limits, the lawn is mowed, there is no more rubbish and none of the problems we see here in Austin.”

Mckay owns some properties in this part of the city. He said the situation was challenging for him as he had previously struggled to lease his property and found graffiti on his shop front.

“I would definitely say the climb is near Anderson Mill towards I-45. It has increased significantly, ”said Mckay.

This neighborhood is still within the Austin city limits. As part of Prop B, the city of Austin is in Phase 4 of its camping ban enforcement, which means Austin Police can begin making arrests for violations.

Phase 4 of the camping ban begins on Sunday, but some areas are already being cleared

KXAN reached out to Austin police on Friday to see if an influx of people affected by homelessness has been drawn to the north and if allegations have been made there.

APD said the area was slated for a cleanup in the near future and there was some confusion over whose jurisdiction it fell.

“I haven’t seen any population decline under the bridges,” Mckay said. “I have people who use the back of my building as a bathroom. We found drugs, we found toilet paper, all sorts of nasty things we shouldn’t be bothered with. ”

The homeless camps near US-183 and SH-45 are also the same neighborhood as the newly purchased Candlewood Suites are located in. Located on Pecan Park Boulevard in Williamson County, the hotel is designed to accommodate people emerging from homelessness.

The purchase of the hotel was rejected by Williamson County executives. District officials said the city did not communicate with them prior to purchasing the property.

Williamson County Commissioners on Tuesday voted to file a lawsuit against the City of Austin over the purchase of the Candlewood Suites.
