Vaccination Incentives in Austin
Austin Public Health is offering people who are 19 and older, who receive their first or second vaccination and complete a survey during an APH event (excluding the Anna Lark Center), will receive a US $ 50 HEB Gift Card. There are only 2,000 gift cards available. At that point, 76.68 percent of the eligible Travis County population had at least been partially vaccinated.
New menu for dinner and alcohol
Austin-based taco chain Tacodeli will be serving plates and alcohol at all of its locations for the first time starting Saturday, August 21. Non-taco dishes include Pastor Yucatan (pork on a banana leaf), mole de pollo (chicken with mole sauce, queso fresco, and sesame seeds), escalopas especial (fried scallops with spiced cashews), arrachera flank steak, and Mexican esquites -Road corn. Drinks include frozen margaritas, palomas, and beers with take away options. Dinner starts at 4:00 p.m. every day.

Temporary closure and relocation
Café El Tigre in Central East Austin is now closed at 1204 Salina Street after the last weekend from August 8th. As it is renovating the neighboring room for its future home, it will start operations in this summer pop-up area for prebiotic soda maker Mayawell at 2609 East Cesar Chavez Street.
Non-profit anniversary party
Food Access advocacy collective Free Lunch is holding an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner red anniversary this month at Prospect House at 12745 Silver Creek Road in Dripping Springs. Tickets that are $ 25 donation must be purchased in advance.
Texas Food Nonprofit Shuffle
Texas Food & Wine Alliance executive director Mariam Parker is leaving the nonprofit. After ten years with the company, she will move to Chicago in the fall. Gina Burchenal will temporarily take over from Parker as interim managing director while the company is looking for permanent occupation of the position. The group has also added two new members to its board of directors: San Antonio Riverwalk Industryvet John Carbajal (currently with the San Antonio real estate firm) and sommelier and beverage industry veteran Paula Rester Salinas (currently beverage director of Side Street Hospitality in Fredericksburg).
Austin restaurant summer breaks
South Congress’s Otoko Omakase Restaurant is on vacation August 9 through Tuesday August 24.
The Micklethwait Craft Meats grill truck hiatus in Central East Austin began on August 2nd and will last through Sunday, August 15th. The Taco Bronco sibling truck will take a break until Friday, August 20.
Austin Award Winner
CultureMap hosted its Tastemaker Awards last week. The winners in Austin include Nixta Taqueria as Restaurant of the Year, Fiore Tedesco from L’Oca d’Oro as Chef of the Year, and Damien Brockway from Distant Relatives as Emerging Star Chef of the Year.
The new vegan patties from Burger Chain
Austin-based restaurant chain Hopdoddy Burger Bar is now using Beyond Burger as a vegan meat option. To that end, the burger chain is taking over Beyond Meat’s roaming food trucks in cities across the country, including Dallas, with dates and locations to be announced later. As a reminder of the change, the current burger of the month is Beyond a Reuben with pastrami mushrooms, sauerkraut, Gruyere, Dijon mustard, cucumber and Russian dressing. Hopdoddy’s veggie patty will stay on the menu.
Austin Food Scholarship Winner
One of the winners of the James Beard Foundation’s National Scholars Program 2021 is an Austinite. Frances Quinton will use her scholarship to go to the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts to eventually become a gourmet cook. The total of 12 winners will receive a US $ 20,000 scholarship for educational purposes.
Austin cookware series
Made In cookware company in Austin and Tecovas are collaborating on a new line of products. The Grill Collection includes a carving knife with a wooden handle, a knife roll made of duck canvas with a Tecovas harness leather and a grill pan made of carbon steel as well as boots. It starts on Tuesday, August 17th.
Chef Shuffle and Restaurant Reopening
Next up on Trudy’s restaurant remodeling plan is the reopening of the North Star location at 8820 Burnet Road on August 2nd. The restaurant group has also added a new head chef, Julian Rodarte, who is refining the menu. The San Antonio chef has worked as a concept chef for brands like 7Up and On the Border. Next up is the opening of the Texas Star location at 409 West 30th Street on the North Campus later this summer.
